How Pair the Edges of a 4x4

4x4
The second part of solving a 4x4 is to pair two edges with the same colours together.  There are 12 edge pairs in total to make.  The goal of this part is to reduce the 4x4 to a 3x3. So you can then solve it like a 3x3.

2x2
This page explains the Ortega Method of solving a 2x2.  This method is for intermediate level solving. There are more algorithms to learn, but you will be able to solve the 2x2 much faster.

How to Solve a 4x4 using the reduction method | COMPLETE GUIDE

4x4

The beginner method to solve a 4x4 is called reduction. The concept is that you reduce the cube to a 3x3.  There are three big parts to solving a 4x4 cube with this method namely:

  1. Solve the Centers
  2. Pair the Edges
  3. Solve 3x3 Stage (with possible parity)

3x3
The algorithms for this method is longer than the beginner method, BUT they are less repetitive, so you will solve the cube in less moves and ultimately be faster. This method is the foundation of the last two steps of the CFOP speedsolving method.

How to do Commutators (swap two centers) on Big Cubes.

Swapping two centers on a big cube (4x4, 5x5, 6x6, 7x7, 8x8, 9x9 etc.etc.) is called a commutator.   Hold the cube so that the two centers you wa...

2x2

A 2x2 is a six sided cubic puzzle similar to the 3x3 Rubik's cube, but it only has two layers, with 4 corners on each layer. There are no center or edge pieces. You can use the same steps to solve a 2x2 as you use for the corners of a 3x3. It can be more difficult to recognise cases as there is no center to reference.

This guide will help you to solve the 2x2 in 3 steps:
